"gmctavish needs more space" (gmctavish)

Between the sudden heat we’ve been getting, and being subjected to heavy traffic, the Raider has been running warmer, and going through coolant. There isn’t any coolant in the oil, no white exhaust, no puddles underneath, nothing else that would point to a head gasket issue or a leak. I’m not sure where it’s going, but in a day and a half of driving, I’ve added half a bottle of coolant, and just as much water. I should probably do a compression test to be really sure, but I really don’t think the head gasket is leaking. This is exactly what it was doing when my friend had it before me, just intermittently disappearing lots of coolant. Very weird, and doesn’t exactly inspire confidence for driving into the middle of nowhere.

Uoa to look for sodium, if not there it’s a much less critical find.

Pin hole or hairline crack somewhere that is being forced out under pressure when running and then evaporating? Or possibly a bad O ring or other seal hidden somewhere.
I’m going with your pressure test idea is probably a good plan.

Oh I like that idea, that doesn’t involve replacing the head or the head gasket.
I meant compression testing the cylinders, but a cooling system pressure test is also a good idea

Huh?

It could be a slow leak that is evaporating before it hits the ground. Or a water pump bearing that only pisses from the weep hole when the thermostat is open, or a pinhole somewhere small enough to only leak while under load. I know jack about that motor, but maybe check the temp sender or any coolant crossover tubes too if you’re poking around.
Best bet would probably be to find a cooling system pressure test kit, pump it up, and verify there is an external leak and hopefully be able to see/hear it to locate it.

I think he’s talking about having your oil analysed. (?)

Ohh that would make sense

What does the rad cap look like? Is it blowing out any coolant under the hood or dripping at all?
You can also do the open rad cap and start it up to see if the headgasket is bubbling exhaust into the cooling system.
White puff on startup?
I found the kit with the exhaust detector fluid was hard to get at CT- $39 and they would’ve had to order it in.

Diesel SWAAAAAAAP! Sorry.... premature?

It’s new as of last year, still looks fine, no blowing off steam or drips under the overflow hose. I will try starting it with the rad cap off, but the lack of white smoke on startup or otherwise, and lack of milky oil is steering me more towards pinhole leak or something somewhere. My friend has an exhaust tester lying around somewhere I believe.

Not too soon haha, just not enough money. I’ll admit that once it started running warmer and I noticed the lack of coolant in the reservoir, I started googling engine swaps...

I haven’t had a vehicle where I was tempted to swap. I have a 230 straight 6 flathead in my new project, it is not the best engine in the world but it’s the correct one and I want it to drive like it did in 1952. I am however putting civilian gears in it so I can go 55-60mph, I might put unpowered disks in the front too, there is a kit for that. After going to Australia I have wanted something Japanese and diesel, but I’m full up on vehicles.

I don’t generally want to swap engines in things, I only sort of want to with this one for reliability reasons. The 4G54 is pretty known for blowing head gaskets and cracking heads at the first sign of too much heat. The fact that this one has survived is somewhat amazing. I like the idea of a diesel swap, but I’m unenthused by the “easy” option of a 4D56, or the better 4M40. It would also be cheaper to just import one that’s already diesel. Then I start looking at how hard it would be to get some basic 5.3 truck LS in there with a manual, and how that would work with my transfer case......Also, because there’s something wrong with me, I enjoy the character of a loud, uncivilized, strangely large but weak 4 cylinder that has to work its ass off just to not-quite keep up with traffic.

Man Kinja is fcuked tonight, I can’t reply to your reply. I think I like swaps because the USA has few options for the combinations I like, no diesel Land Cruisers... all the Toyotas basically. No Delicas, how can they do this to us!? I am not a fan of ruining classics with various swaps, people always ask me why I don’t swap my 240Z, it goes as fast as I ever need to go in it and it sounds amazing. I’m sure when I get the M37 out they will ask why I don’t have a 4BT in it instead of the flathead.

Yeah, that was really truncated and I’m sorry about that. I’d run a used oil analysis to make sure the coolant isn’t making its way into the engine. That lets you know how big of a priority the fix is and if you still want to daily the car (if you have that option) without potentially accelerating wear. What y’all said on pressure test sounds spot on.
